Commitment: Learned or Instinctive?

A few weeks ago I posed a question if people could be taught commitment. Answers varied but most answers leaned toward no. No, people can’t be taught commitment because it comes from within. I can agree with that until I thought about something negative, and that is hate. How many people are hateful? Does the hate come from within or was it taught? The better question is this: is hate a choice? Because if that’s the case, is commitment a choice? I wake up every morning with tasks I have to perform for work, my personal life, and my business. I could choose to be overwhelmed with all that I have to do. However, I made a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, and the longer I’m on this journey, the more committed I am. The irony is that the longer I’m on this journey, the harder my life becomes simply because my level of responsibility has magnified. Does the commitment change because I am accountable to more people and responsible for more tasks? Of course not. If I quit or slow down now, I will find myself in the same place I was over four years ago. Unhealthy, unhappy, and dare I say…hating my lack of discipline and commitment.
